It's official! Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern in the upcoming much-anticipated film adaptation of the DC Super Hero. Negotiations started Friday between Reynolds and his agents and the studio. He beat out Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, and Jared Leto for the part. Reynolds is already a very high-profile actor in the comic book movie world, having just been seen as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and starring in Blade: Trinity as Hannibal King. It looks like he's going to continue to be busy in the world of comic book adaptations, as he is not only tackling the title role of Green Lantern, but is set to play Deadpool again in his own spin-off that is being developed. This guy must love comics, as he was attached to a Flash movie in the past as well.
I love Ryan Reynolds and think he'll do a great job. I just kind of wish they would have given one of the other actors a chance to get in on the super hero game. I might be standing on my own here, but I was kind of hoping for Bradley Cooper. I've seen him in a few movies and he seems to have an acting and emotional range that has yet to be fully realized. Obviously, Justin Timberlake as Green Lantern would have been laughed at and pretty much ruin any chance of the film being taken seriously. Jared Leto would have been a good choice. He could have done an interesting job and wouldn't hold the kind of expectations and career baggage that the other three have to deal with.
As described by ComingSoon.net, "The Green Lantern was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was 'utterly honest and born without fear.'"
Green Lantern is being directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye, the Zorro movies) from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti (Eli Stone, Everwood, Dawson's Creek), Michael Green (Kings, Heroes, Smallville), and Marc Guggenheim (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Eli Stone, Law & Order).
The movie is set to swoop into theaters on June 17, 2011.
