Blu-ray Review: "Black Christmas" Collector's Edition

It's hard to believe that the same talent behind the joyously gritty and darkly violent "Black Christmas" brought us the warm cheeriness of "A Christmas Story." Talk about being polar opposite holiday entertainment. "Black Christmas" is an unsettling, raw, and, and shocking piece of horror cinema that preceded "Halloween" in the holiday-themed slasher film sub-genre explored so often these days. For those who love a little bloodletting during their Yuletide season full of family fun, Director Bob Clark's cult classic thriller is a great gift for yourself or others.

As winter break begins, a group of sorority sisters, including Jess (Olivia Hussey) and the often inebriated Barb (Margot Kidder), begin to receive anonymous, lascivious phone calls. Initially, Barb eggs the caller on, but stops when he responds threateningly. Soon, Barb's friend Claire (Lynne Griffin) goes missing from the sorority house, and a local adolescent girl is murdered, leading the girls to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. But no one realizes just how near the culprit is in "Black Christmas."

"Black Christmas" is rated R for violence and gore, profanity and vulgar talk, nudity, smoking and drinking, and frightening and intense scenes. The nudity is a couple of scenes featuring a man's butt. Some of the dialogue is a lot more obscene that what you might think you'd hear in a movie made in the early 1970s.
