Blu-ray Review: Underworld: Blood Wars

Underworld: Blood Wars is more of the same vampire-on-werewolf action we've come to expect from this tired franchise. Aside from some pretty cool sword fights and hand-to-hand combat, there really is nothing new to see here. You're also left feeling as if the payoff you were promised was never fulfilled as the end credits roll.

Death dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) must fend off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the vampire faction that betrayed her. Joining forces with allies David (Theo James) and Thomas (Peter Andersson), she embarks on a quest to end the eternal war between the two races, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice in Underworld: Blood Wars.

The CGI in Underworld: Blood Wars is subpar at best. I'm surprised that the filmmakers don't strive for a higher quality look. They should use some of the money made off the past four films to continue to improve what we see onscreen.

Underworld: Blood Wars is rated R for strong bloody violence, and some sexuality. There's no actual nudity, just implied sexual activities. There's quite a bit of CGI-enhanced blood and gore. Some of it is frightening and intense, but the weak CGI creatures takes you out of the moment and remind you that it's all just a movie.

The Blu-ray version of Underworld: Blood Wars contains four featurettes including The Evolution of Selene, Old & New Blood, The Evil Evolved, and Building a War. You also get an Underworld: Blood Wars graphic novel accompanied by background music.

Underworld: Blood Wars came out May 2nd, 2017. It was directed by Anna Foerster (Outlander, Criminal Minds). The cast includes Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Tobias Menzies, Charles Dance, and Lara Pulver. The running time is 91 minutes.

Underworld: Blood Wars is available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and HD Digital.

Rating: 🌟🌟 and a half.
