Frightmare 101

Man, I'll tell you...it really never does end does it? The guys over at TFW have now added two acting classes to their series of instructional classes. And when it comes to acting and tying it in to the horror genre, who better to have as a teacher than Friday the 13th, Part VII actress Lar Park Lincoln. I almost called her "scream queen" and then realized that it wouldn't really fit her, since she found a way to kill supernatural Jason. Lar has written a book and taught classes on acting for years now and brings a lot of experience to the table in a teaching atmosphere. read more about her classes and the other Frightmare 101 classes after the jump.

FRIGHTMARE 101!
Lar Park Lincoln will present two courses in our exciting FRIGHTMARE 101 series of instructional classes! The first will be open to any and all actors or aspiring actors and will take place Friday at 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. The second will be open to experienced actors who desire to further their skill in the acting trade. This second class is scheduled for Saturday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

I keep forgetting to post these to the site. You'll have to forgive the weird lighting on the pics. You can only do what you can on the fly. Reesa took the photos and asked the trivia questions. I like to post pictures of the winners of our contests to show everyone that real people actually do win prizes.

Members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit are sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. DIFF 2010 - The Good, The Bad, The Weird, The Reesa

The Good, the Bad, the Weird Review

In 1930 Manchuria, the infamous bandit Park Chang-yi (the Bad) is hired by an industrialist to steal a map from a Japanese official traveling by train. Before he can get there, Yoon Tae-goo (the Weird), a seemingly petty thief, stumbles upon the map while robbing the train. Chang-yi almost catches him but Park Do-won (the Good), a bounty hunter, intent on getting his nemesis Chang-yi distracts the fight and Kang-ho gets away.

We are introduced to the Korean threesome in a great shoot ‘em up sequence on the train as the Bad (Lee Byung-hun) and his gang are chasing the train on horses. All this action is being watched by a Chinese gang, sort of like the western American Indian tribes taking stock of the situation and how to exploit it for their own gains.

Going back to his home base of the Ghost Market, the Weird (Song Kang-ho) doesn’t know what he has in the map. He thinks he should just sell it. His friend tells him that it’s a treasure map of gold and riches buried by the Qing Dynasty which is probably why the gang of Chinese bandits seems to be after him, too. The Bad is the conflicted bad guy with a secret behind his evilness. He kills a centipede with his throwing knife, and then shoots the end of his knife to push it in even harder. He is following the Weird and the Good (Jung Woo-sung) is following the Bad. The Good wears a long black coat and only wants to capture those on his bounty list. He saves the Weird from the Bad and the Chinese gangs. The Weird doesn’t seem to be as graceful or efficient a fighter and manages to get into trouble at every turn. He wants to cut the Good in on the deal with the treasure map if he helps him find it.

The film is filled with non-stop action involving cars, motorcycles, trains, blackmail, Korean independence fighters, being chased by the various gangs, and the Imperial Japanese army. The final scene has the three anti-heroes in a shoot out at the treasure spot which turns out to be nothing but an empty hole…or is it?

Director Ji-woon Kim wrote this 2008 Korean western with Min-suk Kim and it was originally called Joheunnom nabbeunnom isanghannom. It premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was inspired by The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Alternate endings and deleted scenes were released in the Korean and international markets. The Korean ending being more upbeat and then some international versions cut out scenes of animal cruelty. DIFF 2010 - MGF At Walking Distance Premiere

On Thursday, April 15th, director Mel House finally birthed his two years-in-the-making horror / sci-fi film, Walking Distance. I had missed the red carpet event they did earlier in the afternoon, but made it out to the Premiere Party across the street from The Magnolia Theater.

I got a chance to talk to Mel a bit, who seemed very nervous and excited to finally have people see his film. It was a pretty cool little party. Most of the major actors were there, including Adrienne King (Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th, Part 2) and Glenn Morshower (Transformers movies, 24, Star Trek, The Crazies).

They milled around and hung out with everyone, talking and having drinks. Drinks were on the house, which was cool. I got a chance to interview Mel, actress Melanie Donihoo, and Denton Blane Everett.

After the party, we all headed over to the screening, which had a full house and there was applause by friends of the different actors as they showed up onscreen.

After the movie, they hosted a Q&A, which I videotaped and will be posting later this week. I would have to say that the film had a great reception and was liked by pretty much everyone there. I will also be posting the interviews I did later this week as well. (Article by Eric Shirey)

An Afternoon With Brendan Fraser & Brooke Shields

Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields were in Dallas, TX last week to promote their new family film, Furry Vengeance, and MGF was lucky enough to get an invite to the round table with them. Both of the actors were extremely personable and very down-to-Earth. Brendan has a youthful enthusiasm for life in general it seems. Mrs. Shields seems to very much love being a mother, as she mentioned her children and doted on them any chance she got. Read and see more pics after the jump.

I got to talk to Brendan very quickly about the possibilities of another Mummy movie and he said that there are no plans for one right now. What a bummer. I love those movies. I know most movie "critics" or "reviewers" find them useless, but I think they're a ton of fun. He did say, however, that they are working on a second Journey to the Center of the Earth and said he had a blast filming a 3D movie and looked forward to doing it again.

Both Reesa and I were in attendance for the interview and afterwards were given the opportunity to photograph the stars with a Furry Vengeance poster. We then got our pictures taken with the two actors. Check out more of the pictures below.

DIFF 2010 - Reesa Is In The Wake Of Mystery

Wake Review:
A young couple trying to keep awake while driving to a wedding is about 2 hours from Los Angeles. Their playful banter brings unease to Paul, but his girlfriend Adrienne doesn’t notice. She starts to nuzzle him while he’s behind the wheel which causes him to lose control and they spin off the road.

Remarkably they are unhurt, so Adrienne (Jamie Lynn-Sigler) says they have to stop at a hotel, preferably something sleazy since she’s feeling a bit randy. They stop at this vintage looking place that has cabins. It’s run by Frank (Chris Browning) who seems to be working alone and very insistent about being a help to them for anything. They rush off to cabin 6 and proceed to do their thing, but something is bothering Paul (Josh Stewart). He tells Adrienne he doesn’t want to make love to her.

He storms off and goes to the coffee shop. It’s dark and the juke box is playing the same song, “The Devil in His Heart” by the Donays, over and over again. Frank shows up and turns it off. He gives Paul a cup of coffee and cherry pie before leaving him for the motel office. Suddenly a man (Afemo Omilami) walks in speaking cryptically to Paul. He knows Paul and seems to know his “secret” - The “thing” that is making Paul uncomfortable.

Paul returns to his room apologizing to Adrienne when he starts to feel sick to his stomach. He runs to the bathroom and while there finds a Bible verse written on the inside of a cupboard. He checks the motel room Bible and finds a note inside which freaks him out. He tries to show Adrienne, but apparently was imagining it all when there is no proof. When a VCR tape shows up, Paul really starts to lose control.

Meanwhile, this story is interspersed with the story of Frank and Sandy (Angela Featherstone). He was a meek security guard who gets fired from his job for using some store merchandise inappropriately. His wife was on her way to a woman’s support group but changes her mind and picks up a guy at a local bar to bring home. Frank unfortunately walks in on them and the obvious ensues. Paul is seeing Sandy hanging around the motel and once in his room while he’s sleeping with Adrienne.

Somehow, director / writer Chad Feehan manages to unite these storylines in his first feature. The transitions between the storylines are at times jarring. It’s hard to tell what is going on. The dialogue is a bit murky, especially when Paul is talking to the cryptic man. The story of Frank and Sandy would have been more compelling than wimpy Paul’s dilemma. The film just falls short of being spooky and mysterious. It helped that the moody vintage motel in the middle of nowhere says creepy all over it. My staff writer Reesa Cruz-Hawkins' father Ted (properly Theodore) passed away on April 8th and I felt that I should say a few words about such an extraordinary man. I didn't really know Ted well, if at all really. Just what I saw and heard of him. He was always standing in line with his daughter and friends, waiting to get in to whatever film he was seeing that day. I say that day, because anyone who knows Reesa or her father know that they are extremely dedicated movie fans. At any given night of the week, you can pretty much guess that if there was a new movie coming out, they were at the advanced screening in the front of the line to get in.

I believe Reesa told me that Ted was 83 when he passed away. I had recently told her that I would love to sit down with him and discuss how the quality of films had changed over the decades and what he thought about CGI versus real effects, etc. Ted had been seeing movies since he was a boy and it just intrigued me to think about all the technology and changes in filmmaking and marketing that had gone on in just his lifetime. As is usual when you put things off, I never did get the chance and I regret that. I wish I would have come to know him better. I know without a doubt he was a good and giving man because of the daughter he raised in Reesa. She is an absolute blessing to me and my work and I honestly couldn't do it all without her. I want to take a little from what Wes Singleton said about Ted, as he knew him better and has a bit more knowledge of his background. Wes does a movie review website entitled Movie Reviews by Wes.

"In his 80's, Ted was retired from Kodak but was more active than most people half his age, including myself. In addition to two blogs he regularly wrote for, he taught ESL at a local church continuing to use his Spanish skills. He was also a musician, sometimes playing bongo drums for a local drumming group, not to mention playing banjo and harmonica with some fellow retirees in the Dallas Banjo Band. The Dallas Banjo Band not only played gigs throughout the area, but they also earned a spot on the TV show America's Got Talent when it filmed here in the area, just two weeks ago.

Given all this, it's not surprising that Ted, a widower whose wife passed away about 7 years ago, bore a family of artists. Ted Jr. is a professional musician in New York City, Steve is a professional artist in the DFW area and owner of an art gallery, and daughter Reesa is a skilled artist as well, mastering everything from sewing to blogging to webmastering.

Sharp, intelligent and witty, Ted was a voracious reader and crossworder. A World War II veteran, he was well-read, kept up with current events and was an avid conversationalist. Ted was also easy to spot at the movie screenings with Reesa, usually taking one of the first seats in the theater, often armed with a book and his folding chair from sitting in line waiting to get in. Just by the look on his face you could tell afterwards if Ted liked the movie or not.

In the last few weeks, Reesa said "Dad hasn't been doing well lately." With difficulty breathing and losing a little pep in his step, he went to the doctor, and just last week learned he had lung cancer. He was seemingly ready to tackle this next battle with the same energy and positive spirit he was accustomed to and it wasn't going to let it stop him from attending the Dallas International Film Festival. Unfortunately, that battle wasn't to be for Ted. He died peacefully on April 8th on the way to see his doctor, at age 83."

Elbow Murderpants Says Kick-Ass!

Synopsis:
Dave Lizewski, a comic-book fanboy, decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy.

Review:
With the constant stream of comic book movies hitting the screen faster than light particles, you may think Kick-Ass is just another in the long daisy chain of Marvel/DC story lines Hollywood has been courting. It really isn’t. This is not to say that the things you’ll see in Kick-Ass have strictly never been done anywhere else. It’s more like the tone has a unique angle. At the same time both glamorizing and debunking the romanticism of heroism. Cynicism and altruism dance together like a married couple in this flick.

I’d love to get all pedantic and start deconstructing the movie, but there’s really nothing I want to impart other than I really enjoyed it… and I think you will too.

Nic Cage, one could argue, is a pivotal but somewhat ancillary character, so in ways he comes off as perhaps being a bit wasted in the role. He’s also a bit too cartoonish and out of his comfort zone. Aaron Johnson plays the awkward teen Kick-Ass brilliantly and makes the best punching bag I’ve seen in a long time. Mark Strong – who was amazing in Rock ‘n Rolla – (you may recognize him from the recent Sherlock Holmes) is really underrated, and does an excellent job as the main antagonist.

But the little lady who plays Hit Girl, Chloe Grace Moretz, steals the show – This movie is as much about her as it is the puberty-ridden Kick-Ass, whose misguided dreams and poorly-planned endeavor lead him smack-dab into chaos. Moretz is cool and natural in her role and adds the pure delight of true heroic style to this flick.

Despite the large presence of kids and costumes in Kick-Ass – This is NOT a movie for youngsters. As has been said, this is a “Hard R” and should be treated with discretion by parents.

That said – I’m an adult (mostly) – and I loved it. (Review by Elbow Murderpants from Bien Agiter!)

Legendary genre actress Karen Black was in town for DIFF and was the focus of a special presentation by Women In Film Dallas entitled A Conversation With Karen Black. We're talking about Karen Black! She was in Trilogy of Terror, Burnt Offerings, Invaders from Mars, It's Alive III: Island of the Alive, Children of the Night, Children of the Corn: The Gathering, House of 1000 Corpses, and tons more. The event was held in the Festival Lounge at the Hotel Palomar on Monday, April 12th. It was put together as A Celebration of Female Filmmakers and was Invite Only. OK. So imagine this. After almost an entire year of problems with the production of The Green Hornet, Sony says it's unhappy with the film. Really? This just couldn't be! It looks like Disney has found it's Little Mermaid for Pirates 4. Is it just me or is anybody else REALLY tired of hearing any sort of news about Joss Whedon? Don't get me wrong - I loved Buffy and Angel, but besides that has he really ever done anything that has really made a studio money? Serenity and Firefly really aren't a big hit. They have a cult following, but the show and the movie really never took off with the mainstream. His Dollhouse was a flop. Everybody pretty much hates everything sci-fi related he's had a hand in writing - Titan A.E. and Alien: Resurrection. But somehow, this dude keeps getting handed jobs by major studios. Now he's supposedly directing one of the most important and anticipated super hero films? Want to know who's playing Spider-Man this week? DIFF 2010 - Eric Travels Out Of Walking Distance

Synopsis:
A idyllic, small, self-sufficient community. On the surface, it seems like the perfect neighborhood. Everything you could possibly need is within walking distance. But...the pastoral exterior conceals a dark past and an even darker secret. As a group of individuals-each with their own ties and agendas with the town and each other-converges on the enclave, strange things begin to happen. Very strange things. Strange enough to test- and then break-the very fabric of reality itself.

Review:
After what seems like almost two years, Mel House’s independent horror / sci-fi film Walking Distance has finally officially been released. To say it’s a strange little film would be a grave disservice to this project. This is truly something different for those horror fans tired of Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddy. This is thinking man’s horror.

Story wise, I’m not sure I can even fully give you anything to go on. It’s extremely complex and will definitely take you more than one watch to fully take in. I can tell you that director House also wrote the script and a very dark little mind is floating around in that head of his. You can feel the H.P. Lovecraft and A Nightmare on Elm Street influences all over this.

As far as the actors in this film go, you’ve got an interesting bunch of new and veteran players put together. Reggie Bannister from the Phantasm films has a big role and does a great job of running around acting crazy and disturbed by what he thinks are visions. Glenn Morshower (Transformers movies, Star Trek, 24, The Crazies), who usually plays CIA or FBI agents or military generals, gets to break out of his stereotype by simply playing one of the character’s fathers that figures into the story. The real stand-out performance in this comes from first Friday the 13th scream queen Adrienne King. This is her first starring part in front of the camera since her role as sweet Alice in 1981’s Friday the 13th, Part 2. To say the role is a complete 180 from her portrayal of Alice in the Friday movies would be an understatement. In Walking Distance, she plays Louise Strack, who is basically the devious and evil mind behind the terrible manifestations that are happening throughout the town. You can tell that she was reveling in the chance to play someone deliciously devilish. It also features Katie Featherston from Paranormal Activity in the role of the lead character's girlfriend.

Special effects-wise, this runs the whole gambit. You’ve got the old trustworthy slime and ooze practically covering everything. You’ve got people peeling their prosthetic skin off. There’s some skinless folks wandering around in a Hellraiser-type fashion. There’s even crazy Chucky-like dolls that come to life and slash their victims with knives coming out of their fists. CGI helps to bring to life weird sink holes that appear which suck people into them and flaming black charred burn victims that fry anyone they touch.

Anyone who enjoys a twisted horror tale with a serving of sci-fi should love this movie. Although reminiscent of 80’s horror films, it really does hold its own and tread on a different path. This is definitely a movie that you need to have your thinking cap on for. (Review by Eric Shirey)

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil Review

Tucker and Dale are two best friends on their way to their “vacation home” in the Appalachians. On their way, they meet up with some college students who are freaked out by the crazy looking hillbillies and mistake them for psycho killers.

Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine as Tucker and Dale are beer swilling buddies driving along a country road when they stop at a backwoods store for supplies. Dale becomes fixated on the pretty college girls and his friend encourages him to approach them to say hello. Unfortunately, Dale nervously picks up a sickle as a prop when he approaches and scares them with his nervous laugh. This makes the kids jump in the car and speed away.

At the college kids’ camp, one of them tells of a scary story about a hillbilly who attacked some students like themselves about 20 years ago with only one survivor. Since most students have short attention spans they decide to go skinny dipping.

Meanwhile Tucker and Dale’s vacation home is a run down shack in the woods probably owned by some weird backwoods shaman, evident by the bones and weird concoctions left in the house. To them it’s a dream mansion with potential. They decide to go fishing and spy one of the young ladies undressing to dive in (the obligatory skin shot, that’s chaste and PG-13), but she is startled by them and falls into the water. Dale dives in and saves her. When the other students see the hillbillies putting their friend in the boat they run away screaming. This begins the series of misunderstandings that result in unintentional gruesome demises that involve wooden stakes, a wood chipper, guns, and fire. I don’t want to give too much away.

First time director Eli Craig wrote the script with Morgan Jergenson and basically aimed the comedy aspect at some inventive and effect ways of killing off the characters. This is not your typical “Freddy in the woods chasing screaming young girls.” The college kids are a group of nice generic young people who are the equivalent of red uniformed members of Star Trek. The comedy team of Tudyk and Labine has a wonderful chemistry that makes one want to see more Tucker and Dale adventures. This is a whole other take on the slice and dice genre that is hilarious and satisfying. They are still trying to find a distributor for this film, so please fan them on Facebook and Twitter your friends. This was my favorite movie of SXSW and is looking like the tops at DIFF. Eric Thinks That This Movie Is Definitely Kick-Ass!

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy.

Review:
Kick-Ass is everything it’s title eludes to. From start to finish, the film delivers all that is promised and more. It’s got teen angst, a love story, a revenge plot, great action sequences, and a message all wrapped neatly together. It also has a certain pop culture hipness to it.

Storywise, it’s everything you would expect from writer Mark Millar who brought you Wanted. It has a similar flavor and feel to it reminiscent of that movie. The film features everyday people being put into (or putting themselves into) extraordinary situations. Don’t get me wrong – you definitely have to apply some suspension of disbelief. It feels kind of like Spider-Man meets The Punisher.

The characters are all fleshed out well by the actors that play them. Aaron Johnson is absolutely believable in the role of nerdy comic book reading Dave Lizewski / Kick-Ass. Nicolas Cage as Damon Macready / Big Daddy basically ends up playing himself – a guy who has wanted to be or play a super hero his whole life. His channeling of Adam West for his “disguised” hero voice is absolutely hilarious. Chloe Grace Moretz is incredible in the role of Mindy Macready / Hit-Girl. It’s amazing to see this young girl do all this seriously “heavy” adult-oriented acting, but still hang on to her childish nature. What parent let her play this role? Believe me, she will be seen in films for years to come. Mark Strong channels the New York high society drug dealer and “Soprano” type of macho-ness and meshes it all together to create a character you can’t wait to see get his due in the role of Frank D'Amico.

Visually, the film is strikingly well-shot. It’s not really anything new and borrows it’s cinematography angles and tricks from several other movies, but gets the job done. Really, the thing that’s the most shocking to take in is Hit Girl - a little girl - stabbing, shooting, beating up, and cutting up villains left and right. Then, watching Mark Strong – this big grown tough guy – beating the crap out of this little 11-year old girl adds to the shock value.

The movie definitely accomplishes what it was aiming for I believe. It’s a violently action-packed film that aims to shock you and push the envelope while delivering some social commentary. Pretty fun stuff in my opinion. (Review by Eric Shirey)

The guests and screenings just keep on coming in for this year's Texas Frightmare Weekend. The event starts on April 28th, if you count the movie screenings and red carpet walks as part of the whole festival. It wraps up on May 2nd and is taking place at the Sheraton Grand Hotel (4440 W John Carpenter Fwy, Irving, Texas 75063) right on the edge of Dallas. We're adding to our Carpenter/Romero vibe for this year's event! John Amplas is most recognizable to fright fans as the titular bloodsucker in Martin. However, he's also one of the most repeated actors in Romero's movies, having appeared in a total of five Romero films.

Speaking of Romero films, we're pleased to announce Jarlath Conroy who will join Amplas and the previously announced Terry Alexander for a mini Day of the Dead reunion.

Carpenter has his favorite actors as well and Charles Cyphers was obviously one of them. Cyphers was featured in six Carpenter movies beginning with Halloween. Please join us in welcoming the original Sheriff Brackett to the southwest's premier horror convention.

DVD Review - Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Bow-Tique

MY kid didn't care what the focus was on, as long as Donald, Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto were there as well. Disney hooked us up with both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 Blu-ray / DVD combos. As would expect, the digital transfers are great on both films. It was a lot of fun rewatching these movies. My three year old son had never seen them and he immediately started running around the house going "To Infinity and Beyond!" These films really are ageless. It really is hard to decide which one is better between the two when thinking about it.

We've been digging deep for some interesting press and promotional material for Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson's After.Life. We found a pretty cool interview with the movies writer and director, Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, for you to check out. Here's the first part and there's more after the jump.

BLOODY DISGUSTING: First off, congratulations on the release... this was shot in 2008, correct?

Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo: Yes, we shot in 25 days in November/December of 2008, we finished two days before Christmas. And then we were editing at the beginning of 2009, but my editor had to take a hiatus for a couple of months. So he came back and finished it and then we premiered at the AFI in Los Angeles in November of 2009.

BD: How did the project come together? Was it something you had an idea for or was there already a script that you reworked?

AWV: No it was always something that I was fascinated with, death. I’ve been terrified by death, actually since I was a kid. My father died when I was ten years old, so death has been kind of with me and on my mind since then. And I was always fascinated by what really happens when you die, to your body and more importantly to your soul. Like, is there maybe some transitional period when your soul or consciousness stays with you and you’re able to reflect on your life? What does it really mean to BE alive, you know? If you’re physically alive, but mentally kind of sleepwalking through life, are you REALLY alive? That’s the questions I wanted to pose in this film. And in terms of the story, it all started with this image of a young woman lying on a slab in a prep room of a funeral home, and this mortician preparing her body for the funeral. And then suddenly she opens her eyes and says “Where am I?” and he says “You’re in a funeral home, you’re dead.” So I collaborated with two other writers Paul Vosloo and my friend Jakub Korolczuk, who lives in Poland, so it was a really interesting collaboration, I love to collaborate, it’s a great process.

BD: Did you write intending to direct?

AWV: Yes. While writing it, I was directing it in my head; kind of shaping the whole narrative of it and what I wanted to express, and visualizing things and scenes and setups, and just kind of creating this whole world of the funeral home and the prep room. I did so much research, not only research for directing, but also for writing. I kind of know every morgue in New York city at this point (laughs). I went to so many funeral homes and made friends with so many funeral directors, which kind of terrified everyone! All of my friends were freaking out, at one point I was basically just hanging out with funeral home dudes, you know? (laughs). And I’ll never forget going to the LA county morgue; it’s been really kind of an experience you don’t forget. The day I went, they were so overcrowded... they had like 800 bodies and the capacity is I think 400, so you can imagine how crowded it was. And it’s so different than what you usually see on films or even other morgues. It’s huge, like the size of a basketball court or something, and it’s all these rows of bunk beds, basically. There are no drawers, you just see them all lying in these bunk beds in plastic with rope around the neck and feet, and they’re all in various states of decomposition. It’s definitely something I won’t forget.

After a horrific car accident, Anna wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn't believe she's dead, despite the funeral director's reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna's grief-stricken boyfriend Paul still can't shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn't what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over the other side.

After.Life was directed by Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo and stars Christina Ricci, Liam Neeson, Justin Long, Josh Charles, and Chandler Canterbury.

DIFF 2010 - Reesa Parties With The Loved Ones

Australian teen Brent is driving in the car with his power ballad-singing dad, when suddenly he swerves to avoid a half naked and bloody wraith of a person walking in the middle of the road and wraps the car around a tree. A year later the accident that killed his father weighs heavily on Brent’s conscious and he thinks his mom may blame him.

At school he’s approached by Lola a somewhat meek-looking classmate who asks him to be her date for the big school dance. Brent tries to tell her gently that he is already going with his girlfriend, Holly. Holly just got her license and is going to drive them to the dance. To celebrate they hook up in her VW bug, unbeknownst to them that Lola is watching them in the window.

Brent's mom is not happy with Holly driving. She’s overly cautious of young inexperienced drivers which makes Brent feel pangs of guilt. He’s already demonstrating these frustrations by cutting himself with a razor blade that he wears around his neck. He runs off with his dog in the woods where he rock climbs and contemplates letting go, but his sense of self preservation prevails. While he sits pondering, someone silently creeps up behind him and places an ether soaked cloth over his face. He awakens tied to a chair in a party-decorated kitchen with Lola in front of him dressed for prom. Her dad and some strange zombie-like woman with a hole in her forehead are also there. Apparently Lola really wanted a date.

Xavier Samuel plays Brent, the hunky heart throb that looks and moves a little like Kristen Stewart. Robyn McLeavy is fantastic as the sugary sweet Lola, who is a daddy’s girl and extremely demented. John Brumpton is Eric, Lola’s dad and creepy co-dependent, in his daughter’s sick little games of torture porn. Sean Bryne who wrote and directed this amazing feature uses just the right amount of humor and gruesomeness. There’s also little sub-stories like Brent’s best friend and the hot Goth chick that says yes to going to the dance, but just wants to get high.

This is not your typical slice and dice flick. Most of the excitement happens in Lola’s kitchen while she injects Drano in Brent's neck, carves a heart with a fork, and drills holes in his forehead. This is a sick-puppy household, but there’s a layer of humor that underlines the fright without being tongue in cheek. I loved the Loved Ones. DIFF 2010 - The Dry Land Red Carpet Event

Although it doesn't really fit what we cover here at MGF, our dedicated reporter Reesa hit the red carpet event for The Dry Land on Friday, April 9th to get some cool photos. As you can see above and after the jump, she snapped some photos of Wilmer Valderrama and America Ferrera as they walked the carpet and answered questions about the movie.

Of course I am a fan of Wilmer because of Fez in That 70's Show and my son loves him as the voice of Handy Manny. He's also done voice work for Stan Lee's animated Marvel feature The Condor as the title character. He also played the title character in another movie adaptation for the comic book The Dead One.

America Ferrera is the star of Ugly Betty, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, How To Train Your Dragon, and Tinkerbell.

She also got a great shot of character actor Barry Corbin, who has been in so many different movies and TV shows we couldn't keep up. They include Dallas, The Dukes of Hazzard,Ben 10: Alien Swarm, Critters 2: The Main Course, The Twilight Zone, The A-Team, WarGames, and a ton more.

The Dry Land is about "James, a veteran of the Iraqi conflict, who returns home to a small town in West Texas and struggles to reconcile his experiences overseas with the life and family he left at home. Having only scattered memories of the deadly hit on his humvee in Iraq, James quickly slips back into the rhythm of his home life with his wife, Sara, and his mother, Martha. However, taking a new job at his Father-In-Law's slaughterhouse begins to stir his dormant anxieties."

Interview With Nicolas Cage For Kick-Ass

Dave Lizewski, a comic-book fanboy, decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy.

Kick-Ass was directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Nicolas Cage.

The movie busts into theaters on Friday, April 16th.

Iron Man Makes His Grand Entrance In First Clip!

The promotional machine just keeps churning away for Iron Man 2. Paramount just sent us the first official clip entitled Skydiving for the highly anticipated sequel. The clip features Iron man skydiving into the Stark Expo and making his grand entrance as Tony Stark among dancing Iron "Women". Pretty humurous stuff and, as usual Robert Downey Jr. is perfect in the role. Check it out after the jump.

The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts, and James "Rhodey" Rhodes at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.

Iron Man 2 was directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson.

The movie flies into theaters on May 7th.

SXSW 2010 - Directing The Dead Q&A Panel

I know, I know. It's very late to be posting up some stuff still from this year's film festival. Here's the Directing The Dead: Genre Directors Spill Their Guts panel from SXSW 2010. It took place in Austin, TX on Saturday, March 13th. The Q&A featured genre directors Robert Rodriguez, Neil Marshall, Ti West, Ruben Fleischer, and Matt Reeves discussing anything and everything under the sun that involves making and producing horror films. Luckily, our roving reporter Reesa happened to be there with her trusty digital recorder. There's some good stuff here, folks. Anyone into the director's individual films will take something away from this. It was over an hour long, so we had to chop it up into 10 minute sections. It's well worth a listen in it's entirety. Reesa Ponders How Boring After.Life Can Be

A school teacher is having a bad day. Her boyfriend needs reassurance of her love but she just can’t seem to respond. After an argument before dinner, she stomps out of the restaurant and into the pouring rain. She loses control of her car and before you know it, she wakes up on a mortuary slab where she asks, “Where am I?” and gets the answer, “You are Dead”.

Anna (Christina Ricci) is walking through her daily schedule in a haze. One of her young students is particularly focused on her. He asks her if he can attend the funeral of her old piano teacher. At the funeral home, she thinks she sees the corpse open his mouth for a second. Odd - are her eyes playing tricks? She is also experiencing unexplained nosebleeds and is seeing flickering lights. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) is being transferred and wants to pop the question on their dinner date. He doesn’t get that far when she assumes that he’s breaking up with her. They begin to bicker and she storms off in a huff, jumping in her car in the pouring rain. Having a change of heart, she searches for her cell phone when a white van clips her and she spins out of control.

When she gains consciousness, mortician Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) tells her calmly that she is dead. He’s preparing her for her funeral. He tells her that he has the ability to communicate with souls who are trapped between life and final death. She feels alive and can hear him, but can’t hear her own heartbeat or feel her pulse. He injects her with something that he says will help her muscles relax and stop the progression of rigor. She later discovers she can move and can move things around her.

Deacon is all peace and calm talking with family members of the deceased with grave concern and politeness. He also talks to the bodies that he is readying for viewing. He takes pictures of them and attaches them to bags with their personal belongings - like a memory book in the closet. He tells Anna the dead are like his children that he’s preparing for the next life. But is she really dead? And what’s that stuff he’s injecting into her?

This is the feature debut by director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, who also wrote the script with her husband, Paul Vosloo, and Jakub Korolczuk. The mood is slow, deliberate, and the music punctuates with a pulsating beat just in case you didn’t know this was supposed to make you jumpy. Neeson is wonderfully creepy as the über undertaker saying lines like, “You all say you're scared of death. But the truth is you're more scared of life.” Justin Long runs around freaking out, trying to figure out why he said yes to be in this movie. Like one friend said, she kept waiting for him to show his Mac. Christina Ricci staggers around on unsure legs like an alien. She’s quiet lovely, but it feels like mortuary porn while she lays around in a little red dress or lounging stark naked on the slab. Add in the creepy little boy who becomes Deacon’s protégé and the movie is still a muddled mess. (Review by Reesa Cruz Hawkins of Dallas Movie Screenings)

DIFF Is Within Walking Distance For Mel House

We got some very cool news last night. Independent horror director Mel House is having the world premiere of his new film, Walking Distance, at the Dallas International Film Festival next Thursday, April 15th. A lot of the cast will be there for a Q&A after the film. The film features Katie Featherston, who has since filming this went on to become an international horror icon as the possessed chick in Paranormal Activity. At least something good came out of that awful film - it helped boost Walking Distance into the eyes of studios and gave director House a little something extra to use to help promote his film, which I'm sure has to be light-years smarter and better than that P.O.S. Paranormal Activity. It's also the first movie that original scream queen Adrienne King has been in since her last appearance in Friday the 13th, Part 2. I actually interviewed Mel House and Adrienne King about Walking Distance last year at Texas Frightmare Weekend. You can check out those interviews after the jump and read the press release from DIFF about the screening event on Thursday.

Added to the DALLAS IFF lineup of films is Mel House’s horror thriller WALKING DISTANCE. Focusing on a small neighborhood community where everything is safely within walking distance, the inhabitants discover that the pastoral surface conceals a dark past and an even darker secret. As a group of individuals – each with their own ties and agendas with the town and each other – converges on the enclave, strange things begin to happen.

The film features an impressive lineup of stars including Denton Blane Everett, Glenn Morshower (24, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN), Katie Featherston (PARANORMAL ACTIVITY), Kathy Lamkin (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) Debbie Rochon (AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), Shannon Lark (Fangoria Spooksmodel) and classic horror icons Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM) and Adrienne King (making her first major big screen appearance since the original FRIDAY THE 13TH). Summit Entertainment sent over the production notes and press kit for their upcoming family comedy Furry Vengeance. It looks like it could be some fun to see. I know there's a lot of people out there that don't care for Brendan Fraser, but I like the guy. I like all The Mummy movies and thought Journey to the Center of the Earth was a lot of fun, as well. DIFF 2010 - Reesa Vacations In A Town Called Panic

In a little French village lives Horse with Cowboy and Indian. It’s the Horse’s birthday and the cowboy and Indian forgot. Instead of a hat that they give him every year, they decide to build him a barbeque. When they order the bricks online, a coffee cup leans on the enter key and instead of getting 50 bricks, it ends up tallying 5 million.

They lure Horse out of the house by getting their neighbor Steve to call and ask him to pick up his animals at music school. Horse is enamored with the teacher Madame Longree. The beautiful female horse talks him into signing up for piano lessons. When coming home, they get stuck in traffic due to the many trucks delivering bricks. Cowboy and Indian freak out and try to hide the bricks but manage to still make the barbeque. Horse crashes his car into it before they celebrate his birthday drinking and dancing with the neighbors and the policeman. Unfortunately, Cowboy and Indian stashed the brinks on top of the house. After they all go to bed, the house begins to crush from the weight. Horse and his friend’s escape, but the house is ruined in a mountainous pile of bricks. He makes the mischievous Cowboy and Indian rebuild his house. The next morning, they find the structure gone. They do it again and once more it’s disappeared. They set up a trap and chase the thieves underground. There, they encounter mad scientists with super strength who have a large mechanical penguin / sled that scoops up snow so they can take snowball shots at random people all over the world. After escaping from these guys, they discover the creatures that stole their walls used them to make their own house. The creatures trick the trio by getting them chased by barracudas. They managed to find a way up into their neighbor’s pond, but the creatures followed them.

The stop-motion animated clay characters are from a 2000 series produced in Belgium by Vincent Patar and Stephane Aubier. The crude figures are made to look like cheap toy figurines with the base bottoms. Cowboy and Indian are like troublesome kids and Horse is their steady and forgiving friend. The story is not a fixed plotline and each of their adventures is like individual episodes which all come out to make sense at the end. Like The Fantastic Mr. Fox, it’s cleverly animated with humor that should please older teens and kids. Smaller ones may have problems with the French dialogue and reading the subtitles. It’s funny, incredible, and slightly manic. You never know what to expect next. (Review by Reesa Cruz Hawkins of Dallas Movie Screenings)

2010 DIFF - Reesa Mixes It Up At DIFF Press Party

Our very own Reesa Cruz-Hawkins hit the town last night for the 2010 Dallas International Film Festival Press Meet and Greet Party. She shot some photos, ate free Mexican food, and had a bit to drink while mixing it up with the Dallas film elite. Sounds like a good time. I, on the other hand, can go to practically nothing because of scheduling conflicts. Oh well, you win some, you lose more. After the jump, you can read her scene report and check out some photos of the event.

The Filmmaker Lounge is on the 9th floor of the Palomar Hotel right across busy Mockingbird Lane from the Angelika Theater. It is nicely decorated with comfy seats, artsy fixtures, and framed vintage movie posters. There's a game room with a pool table, a bar serving Stoli Vodka and Stella Beer, and Mattitos had a buffet of Mexican finger food. The Press Party was supposed to start at 8PM. We (Wes from Pop Syndicate and myself) thought we were fashionably on time, but the place was already packed. We were given fresh-from-the-press festival books that still smelled of ink with our credentials and information sheets and then were let loose to go enjoy the festivities. Suddenly, the lights went out. Good thing the space had huge windows. We were eating mystery food from the buffet. It was also amazingly loud in there and hard to actually talk to people who were also hard to see. They eventually brought the lights back on slowly in sections, but by then it was also pretty hot.

As we were leaving, Chairman of the Board of the Dallas Film Society Michael Caine came in with actor Bill Paxton. We left shortly afterwards to get some air. Dead@17 - The Witch Queen Issue One Review

Josh Howard continues his adventures of Nara Kilday in the Dead@17 universe in the first issue of The Witch Queen. This time around, Nara has ended up in Purgatory trying to live in isolation away from the battle between good and evil, but no one involved seems to want to let her.

It is pretty cool how Howard ties two of his different comic book worlds together. It's almost like he had it planned out from the beginning, which very well could be. He's got the main bad girl from The Lost Books of Eve, Lilith, trapped in Purgatory with Nara. Another fun return to the series is the reappearance of Joan D'Arc, who is the "resurrected" incarnation of the original female warrior leader.

Once again, there's not much I can say bad about this chapter in the D@17 series. It constantly moves forward at a frenzied pace and has some great plot twists and turns on the journey. Howard never lets me down in both story and artwork.

The religious aspects of the story are still intact. No matter how controversial his skimpy-dressed female character artwork may be, he sticks to his guns when it comes to the message and theme behind the stories. (Review by Eric Shirey)

After Dark And SyFy Partner Up For Scream Of The Banshee

After Dark Films sent us the official press release announcing their partnership with SyFy Channel to produce the company's first Saturday Original Movie. It's called Scream of the Banshee and stars Lauren Holly and genre-veteran Lance Henriksen. If it's got Lance Henriksen in it, then it is automatically cool with me and countless other horror fans. UK Website For The Good, The Bad, The Weird

I can't seem to find a website for The Good, The Bad, The Weird so I figured I'd steer everybody over to the film's official UK and Irish website. It has a picture gallery, trailer, and synopsis of the film. You can also order the Region 2 DVD or Blu-ray for whatever reason you'd want to do that. Something else that made even more interested in seeing this film is the fact that it is directed by the same guy who did one of the greatest Asian horror films I've ever seen - A Tale of Two Sisters. I was literally crawling up on the top of my couch while watching that film.

Set in the 1930s Manchurian desert where lawlessness rules and many different ethnic groups clash, three Korean men fatefully meet each other on a train. The train's diverse passengers and imminent danger with guns and knives everywhere serves as a microcosm of the turbulent times. Do-won is a bounty hunter who tracks down any criminals with rewards on their heads. Chang-yi is the leader of a group of tough-as-nails bandits. He cannot stand to be the second best. Tae-goo is a train robber with nine lives. The three strangers engage in a chase across Manchuria to take possession of a map Tae-goo discovers while robbing the train. Also on the hunt for the mysterious map are the Japanese army and Asian bandits. In this unpredictable, escalating battle for the map, who will stand in the end as the winner?

The Good, The Bad, The Weird was directed by Kim Jee-Woon and stars Jung Woo-sung, Lee Byeong-heon, Song Kang-ho, Ryu Seun-su, and Zhang Qi.

Review:
Some things are better left unchanged. There are things that should be kept the way they are or were and not assimilated for the times. That's how I feel about the Full Moon films. They've held a nostalgic place in my heart since I first saw Subspecies back in the day. When you watch low-budget genre fare, a lot of times you take an attitude of viewing it to poke fun at it and get a laugh. Somehow, the Full Moon movies always seemed to demand your respect. There was always this "classy" feel to all their films, no matter how bad the special effects or acting were. It wasn't bad quality - it was Full Moon quality. Now, on to Demonic Toys 2.

Demonic Toys 2 is actually the fourth film featuring the deranged possessed killer playthings. It also ties into another Full Moon movie, Hideous, for some reason through the character of Dr. Lorca. Charles Band likes to tie his different films together, so it actually isn't that surprising. Only two of the original "Toys" are in this one - the foul-mouthed Baby Oopsie-Daisy and the evil jester-in-a-box Jack Attack. They did add a toy named Divoletto to the bunch that looks like a devil doll that's been ran through the washer and dryer too many times. This new doll definitely fits in perfectly with the original two. Seeing the toys again in all their vulgar and killing glory was excellent.

The film had great atmosphere, which is something that Full Moon has somehow always achieved. This time the setting is a giant abandoned Italian castle with spooky passages and underground tunnels. It's also haunted by some crazy lady that was suppossedly possessed.

Of course, there's your typical set of characters. The crazy old doctor that collects forbidden items; the mistress that is only with him for his money; the assistant who is secretly conspiring with the mistress to take the doctor's fortune; the eccentric curator who is there to overlook everything; the doctor's medium and supernatural advisor who likes to perform seances on a whim; the poor stepson who is caught in a horrible life with the doctor and his mistress; and the innocent smart attractive female researcher who gets interested in the stepson and is watching over the Italian castle. They're all there and they're all trapped and forced to stay the night in this monstrous place with three killer toys and a demonic ghost that wants to be unleashed and live again.

The visuals and special effects are cheesy in just the right way. It's almost like they purposely made the special effects look like they were done in the '90s. There's also great shots of the outside of the castle with lightning flashing and rain coming down, just like in those old haunted house movies like The Haunting, The legend of Hell House, and others.

Overall, Demonic Toys 2 is exactly what you know it's striving to be. A lot of gory fun that takes you back to those late-night video-watching marathons you pulled in the early '90s. Remeber that - when you had less responsibilities and didn't take everything so seriously. (Review by Eric Shirey)

Kick-Ass writer Mark Millar was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2000 for what comic book?

Dave Lizewski, a comic-book fanboy, decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. TFW Premieres I Spit On Your Grave Remake Footage

Anchor Bay Entertainment is bringing you the remake of the cult classic I Spit On Your Grave and Texas Frightmare Weekend is going to be the first place you can see footage and clips from the film! There will also be a Q & A session with Director Steven Monroe and the cast including Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, and Rodney Eastman. They will be at the event all weekend long to meet and greet fans. What else can the TFW guys add to this thing to make it any cooler for horror fans? In the mythical world of Greece, a war is brewing between men and the gods of Mount Olympus. Zeus, the king of the gods, has overthrown the ruling Titans with his brother Poseidon and Hades. The killing blow is struck by Hades’ creation, The Kraken, which is now locked away in the deep sea. Zeus had conspired with Poseidon, who was given control of the oceans, and relegated the underworld to Hades. Hades harbors resentment for being given this realm and awaits the day when he will sit on the throne of Olympus.

Zeus (Liam Neeson) had fathered a child with the mortal wife of the king of Argos in retaliation for the king claiming independence of the gods. Zeus and his twelve Olympians cannot survive without the love and devotion of the humans. The wife bears Zeus’s child and in anger, the Argos king puts his wife and child into a coffin and throws it into the sea. The child survives, being a demi-god and all, and is found by a kind-hearted fisherman who raises the boy - Perseus (Sam Worthington) - as his own.

When the family goes to honor at the statue of Zeus, they find the soldiers of Argos destroying it. Then, suddenly Hades (Ralph Fiennes) rises in a cloud of black smoke in the form of things that look like the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz (only deadlier and without the cute clothes) and goes about killing the men. When he spots Perseus on the family fishing vessel, he destroys the boat and his family. Perseus is rescued from the sea and brought to the court of the new king of Argos. The city and the court are filled with people who are openly defying the gods. The queen declares that her daughter, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), is more beautiful and perfect than the gods. Hades again appears in the black smoke and turns the queen into an old hag. He gives the king an ultimatum of having Argos completely wiped out or sacrificing his beautiful daughter to The Kraken. Before he leaves he outs Perseus as the son of Zeus, thus setting up Perseus to find a way of destroying The Kraken from the three blind witches.

Perseus sets off across the barren wilderness accompanied by soldiers, adventurers, and Io (Gemma Arterton), a demi-god who is being punished by having to endure immortality and never having to grow old, remaining young and beautiful forever. Sucks, huh? The last half of the movie involves fighting scorpion-like creatures, Medusa, and the man that used to be Argos’s king now deformed and possessed by Hades. Then comes the final battle with The Kraken. There’s lots of fighting and CGI that should have been rendered amazing by 3D. But instead, it only enhances the futility of trying to transfer a 2D movie into a 3D movie after the fact and begs the question of why bother with the technology?

Director Louis Leterrier, who also did The Incredible Hulk and Transporter 2, knows his way around heavy CGI action movies. It would have been more palatable if the story, by Travis Beachman, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, was more epic rather than an excuse to fight more monsters. Worthington does a good job playing the good guy who doesn’t want to be a demi-god while running around in a skirt. Liam Neeson didn’t have to project anything until the “release The Kraken” Line. Ralph Fiennes steals the movie with his hunched over smarmy back-stabbing and underhanded underworlder, trying to double-cross his brothers. The movie is not a complete loss; it’s entertaining with its non-stop action, when the action is happening. It was just disconcerting at times when I had the original movie still rolling around in my head and I was drawing comparisons. At least they gave a visual nod to the mechanical owl from the first film. (Review by Reesa Cruz Hawkins of Dallas Movie Screenings)

The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards were created by David Colton and Kerry Gammill at the Classic Horror Film Boards in 2002. The awards are fan-based, and have no connection to any commercial sponsor. Anyone in fandom can vote or propose nominees.

The 'Rondo' award itself, shown at right, features a bust sculpted by illustrator Kerry Gammill, and cast by modeler Tim Lindsey.

Eric Tries To Clean Up A Mess Of The Titans

Synopsis:
Caught amid a war between the gods, Perseus, the son of Zeus, is helpless to save his family from Hades, god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus leads a band of warriors on a dangerous quest to prevent Hades from overthrowing the king of the gods and laying waste to the Earth.

Review:
Clash of the Titans - how many different things could have been wrong with thee? Let me count them - or at least attemt to list them out. But before I do that, let's get the good out of the way. That shouldn't take up too much space.

Hmm - the good things. It's action-packed and pretty much never let's up from the get-go. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as Hades - all wheezy, manipulative, and just generally creepy like a serpent. Liam Neeson is commanding in that way that he always is. That's about all there is good about this movie.

Alright, where to start with the bad. So much ground to cover. Let's start with the 3D. It's absolutely awful. It barely had any depth to it at all. During the action sequences all it managed to do was jumble up the image and confuse you as to what you're supposed to be looking at. This was transferred to 3D after it was filmed and should have been left in 2D.

Next, let's hit the special effects and creature design. First off, Medusa looked atrocious. We're talking The Scorpion King in The Mummy Retuns terrible. Her head and facial features in every single shot were no more than 1995 CGI quality. Also, why did it seem like every single creature and monster felt like it had evolved from the same gene pool? The Kraken looked like it was related to the three blind witches - same look, texture, facial features, and shape. The only real difference from what I saw between the two were that The Kraken had eyes. Moving on, what was up with most of the creatures having sharp stingers on their body parts? It's not enough that The Kraken has giant tentacles and is a behemoth, he has to have pointy stingers on the end of his appendages just like the giant scorpions' tails. Even Medusa's tail has a sharp point on it.

Let's address the characters now. For some reason, we're supposed to care what happens to the people of the city of Argos. From what we're shown, it's filled with a bunch of bratty types who have a chip on their shoulders against the gods. We're shown the King's court and it's a bunch of hedonistic revelers and an egotistical king and queen basically shaking their tiny little fists at the heavens while mocking the gods. By the time Hades shows up at the party and punishes the vain queen by turning her into an old wrinkled lady, I was literally chjeering for The Kraken to destroy the entire city of ingrates. Heck, why wait? I wish Hades would have just wiped out the whole city right then. This movie is full of characters you are given no reason to care about. As a matter of fact, the only character that has any redeeming qualities at all is the King and Queen's daughter, Andromeda. She's willing to die for this pathetic city full of nutty religious zealots and spoiled brat citizens. She's even shown handing out bread to the poor and dying in the streets.

Now to the story. The original idea and motivation for Perseus' journey is completely changed and butchered, turning this into a whiny quest for vengeance against Hades for the god killing his adopted family. He's not even in love with Andromeda, which pretty much kills any motivation to save her off. He's in love with this chick that might as well be a demi-god like him. She's been "cursed" to stay eternally young and beautiful. Man, is she bad off or what? Of course, the apparently shallow Perseus is going to pick her to be with. I don't even know how to categorize my next complaint. Maybe it would fall under plot holes? The whole reason for Andromeda to be sacrificed to The Kraken is to save Argos. So why does The Kraken start destroying the city before he even attempts to take Andromeda? Doesn't that kind of defeat the entire purpose of Perseus' odyssey? Another thing that bothers me like that was how the angry crowd drags and pushes Andromeda to the sacrificial altar, even when it is all too apparent that she's willing to go and forfeit herself already. It's just mindlessness and a reason to stir up some drama onscreen.

In closing, Clash of the Titans is a mess. I won't say that it wasn't partially entertaining. It's not boring. Just don't expect any semblance of sense, a well-thought out story, or any kind of intelligence to shine through when you go see this. You truly have to walk into the theater, completely shut off your brain and any level of common sense you have, and just become a popcorn-devouring vegetable to enjoy it. Personally, I'll stick with Harry Hamlin, the robotic Bubo, and Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion work and animation. Heed my last warning - Go see this in 2D, not in 3D! Save your hard-earned money. The official website for Iron Man 2 has gone live. There's all kinds of cool stuff over there to check out. You can see the trailers and clips; download some wallpapers; read about the movie; check out a gallery of photos, which include some of Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury; and get AIM icons. They sure seem to be pushing the Nick Fury character pretty heavily. They have an AIM icon and wallpaper for him. I have a feeling he might be in this thing more than we've been led to believe. After Dark Originals Introduces Prowl

After Dark Films sent us over a press release and some images from their first of 8 Originals they are releasing. It's called Prowl and it sounds pretty cool. Summit fired over three new stills from the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Note that in these photos, there's no one holding each other, staring dreamily into each other's eyes, or looking like they're about to start making out. There may not be a whole lot of action or gore happening in them, but it at least gives me SOMETHING to hang on to as far as hope for now. In the picture above, it looks like the vamp family is looking at something pretty scary or crazy, which also gives me hope. I mean, if it makes vampires look that worried or shocked it's got to be bloody or disturbing, right? I'm actually just messing around. I like the Twilight movies and all their romantic teen angst. Official Pix and C2 Ventures are bringing the science fiction celebrities, comic book artists, and vendors back to the Dallas / Fort Worth, TX area again for their semi-quarterly Sci-Fi Expo on April 24th and 25th. It's all taking place at The Richardson Civic Center (411 W. Arapaho Rd.) in Richardson, TX just north of Dallas.

This time around, they have got some really awesome guests appearing for the first time ever and some returning to greet there fans again. Newcomers at this show are Bruce Boxleitner (Tron, Tron Legacy, Babylon 5, Heroes), Mira Furlan (Lost, Babylon 5), Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica), Deep Roy (Star Trek, Return of the Jedi, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Transformers II, X-Files, and Chronicles of Narnia), Dickey Beer (Stuntman for Return of the Jedi who played Barada, Biker Scout, Gamorrean guard, Stormtrooper, and Boba Fett), Alan Harris (several different roles in the Star Wars movies including Bossk, Cloud city guard Merril, and more), and Roger Christian (Set director of STAR WARS: A New Hope - helped craft the very first R2 for George Lucas out of wood, 2nd unit director for Phantom Menace, production designer for Alien). These guys are out of control! They never stop. Just when you start to think that one convention event couldn't possibly get any bigger or better, you're proven wrong. The coordinators over at Texas Frightmare Weekend appear to never stop working. They have added two additional nights of movie screenings AND red carpet events with the actors, directors, and people behind the films that are showing.

On top of all that, they've added two more guests! Special Effects master and director Robert Hall will be in attendance. Robert is the director of the already cult-classic Laid to Rest and the upcoming Old Scratch. He also runs the Almost Human special FX house, whose work was just seen recently in The Crazies. Also added to the Christine reunion, is bad boy Buddy Repperton himself - actor William Ostrander.

TITLES INCLUDE US PREMIERE OF “2001 MANIACS: FIELD OF SCREAMS,” GEORGE ROMERO’S “SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD,” AND ADAM GREEN’S “FROZEN”

DALLAS, TX, March 29, 2010 – Texas Frightmare Weekend announced it has extended the dates for its companion Texas Frightmare Film Festival this year (April 28 – May 1). Highlights from the lineup include the US Premiere of Tim Sullivan’s 2001 MANIACS: FIELD OF SCREAMS, George Romero’s SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD and Adam Green’s Sundance hit, FROZEN.

Green’s FROZEN stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers and follows the life or death choices a trio of skiers and snowboarders must make when they find themselves abandoned on a ski resort chairlift. The film, which was a surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival in January will screen at the Studio Movie Grill in Lewisville on Wednesday, April 28 at 7:00PM.

Romero’s SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD is the 6th film in his vaunted zombie series. The film follows characters from his prior outing DIARY OF THE DEAD and takes them to an island community inhabited by two feuding factions of locals divided not just by their approach to the zombie threat, but to years of family disputes. The film, which adds an unlikely western flavor to Romero’s legendary themes, will screen at the Studio Movie Grill in Lewisville on Thursday, April 29 at 7:00PM.

Sullivan’s 2001 MANIACS: FIELD OF SCREAMS follows the mayhem that ensues after the failure of a fresh group of unsuspecting Northerners to show up for their annual Guts N' Glory Jamboree, inspires the residents of Pleasant Valley to take their cannibalistic carnival on the road and head to Iowa where they encounter the cast and crew of a reality show. The film will screen at the Studio Movie Grill in Lewisville on Thursday, April 29 at 9:00PM. Attending the screening will be Sullivan along with cast members Bill Moseley, Christa Campbell, Kevin Ogilvie, Ryan Fleming, Lin Shaye, Katy Johnson, Jordan Yale Levine, Nicole Rae and Kathryn Le.

The screenings will feature red carpet entrances populated by several stars and filmmakers of the films as well as the horror and the genre stars attending Texas Frightmare Weekend.

Screenings on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 will take place at the Sheraton Grand Hotel (4440 W John Carpenter Fwy, Irving, Texas).

I've always thought it was cool to see how an animated film comes into being. DreamWorks hooked us up with a couple of frames of animation progression for their new 3D hit, How To Train Your Dragon. It's amazing how this stuff gets from the sketched storyboard to the finished polished CGI stage. A Viking teenager named Hiccup lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teen's smarts and offbeat sense of humor don't sit too well with his tribe or its chief... who just happens to be Hiccup's father. However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other Viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. But when he encounters (and ultimately befriends) an injured dragon, his world is flipped upside down, and what started out as Hiccup's one shot to prove himself turns into an opportunity to set a new course for the future of the entire tribe.

How To Train Your Dragon was directed by Christopher Sanders and Dean DeBlois. It features the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson.

James hosted the party and had local girl Sterling Biegert out with her pride and joy, Bella's beat-up rusty red Chevy pick-up from The Twilight Saga. Biegert let people get there picture taken where Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, and Bella have all parked their behinds for a donation to the owner's favorite local charities that benefit children and abused women. "For a guy who is not into the whole sparkly vampire thing, I really enjoyed myself last Friday night. If you missed it, March 19th the Borders in Lewisville hosted a New Moon DVD release party and invited everyone out to celebrate. In attendance was one old beat-up, red Chevy pick-up owned by local girl, Sterling Biegert.

Things kicked off about 9:30 when the Biegerts arrived with the truck. There was already a crowd waiting outside in anticipation, even the staff kept asking where they were. Once we got them parked, a line was formed and for a small donation you could actually sit inside and pretend you were Bella. Some folks even brought there own props and I don’t know how many times I heard the line “I sat where Robert Pattinson sat” or how many times they took pictures of the dent in the left rear fender.

Inside the Borders Books, there were games and refreshments and at quarter to midnight another line formed and the countdown started. Many folks went home that night satisfied as well as the staff. Even the ones who dreaded the night full of teens actually enjoyed themselves."

Bloody Disgusting's The Eclipse Review

We haven't had a chance to see the supernatural / romance film The Eclipse, so we figured we would post a review by BD from Bloody Disgusting. We figured that if any true horror fan would review it the way we would, then it would them. So here you go:

Unlike certain other recent “romantic horror” films (this even shares the title with one’s upcoming sequel) Conor McPherson's The Eclipse takes time to develop its characters, which not only makes the story far more interesting, but also allows for the scares (which, to be fair, are fairly limited - more on that later) to really work; I must admit I got jolted twice, whereas I'm usually amazed if they can get me once.

The film concerns a would-be writer (Ciarán Hinds) who volunteers for the annual literature festival in a seaside town in Ireland. He gets directly involved with two of the authors: a celebrity novelist played by Aidan Quinn, and a horror novelist (Iben Hjejle), with whom Quinn had a one night stand with some time before (and wants to continue the affair). So yeah - it doesn't exactly scream horror, but that's actually what makes it work. There are only five attempts at scares in the entire movie, two of which made me jump and one (the first) just plain creeped me out. And the reason they work so good is that the love triangle plot was compelling enough for me to keep forgetting that there was a horror element to the proceedings, catching me off guard.

Now, because the focus is on the romance/character study, "horror and nothing else" fans will probably hate the film (expect to see the word "boring" thrown around a lot if you read any reviews). The horror elements are never really expanded upon - don't look for a scene where Hinds fights the ghost or digs up town records in order to find a bunch of exposition, because it's not there. All of the ghost appearances are the result of his character's guilt manifesting itself. For example, the first couple of "appearances" seem to be of his (still living) father-in-law, who is in a nursing home and was left behind when the festival began (Hinds forgot to pick him up). Most movies would just have this sort of character flaw play out in a normal way - Hinds would realize his error and call the guy to apologize, or drink, or whatever. In this movie he gets pulled into the ground by a bloodied arm (whether the apparitions are real or psychological is never explained, nor does it matter). But they never go beyond that - brief but largely successful scares that help reflect the character's state of mind.

Hinds is terrific in the film. He's in all but one or two scenes, and those non-Hinds scenes suggest that the film will be a complete study of all three characters, but ultimately the film is solely about his character's grief (his wife died before the film began - hence why he is in charge of looking after his father-in-law) and how he tries to put himself out there after living in borderline seclusion for so long. It's a sad portrait (Quinn provides the film with its few moments of humor), which could border on depressing with a less appealing actor in the role, but Hinds makes it not only watchable, but enjoyable. You really feel for the guy and want him to break out of his shell.

My only quibble is that they suggest some stuff and never really develop it into a meaningful plot thread. Hjejle's character writes ghost novels, and they sort of suggest that she, like Hinds, is haunted by apparitions as well, but never go beyond that hint. Granted, the film is about Hinds' growth, but it seems odd to bring it up and not do anything with it; she could have just as easily been a romance novelist for all the purpose her horror background serves to the story. I guess we can assume that Hinds takes an interest in her because he thinks she can help him understand why he is seeing these things, but she's also a very attractive woman in his age group (not that he fawns all over her), so I don't think anyone in the audience would think much of it if they struck up a friendship without any supernatural-based connotations. Then again it's also an incredibly short film (88 minutes), so maybe there was more to it and it was cut to keep the focus on Hinds (and again, keep the audience from thinking they were watching a traditional horror movie).

Magnolia is putting this one out, which means it will probably debut on VOD at the same time as its theatrical release. I'm sure it will play just as well at home (I doubt it will be playing in more than a handful of screens across the country), but if it IS in a theater near you, see it that way. Magnolia has consistently released interesting genre fare over the past few years, and I don't want them to abandon theatrical releases due to everyone simply watching them On Demand.

Yay...Yawn...Director Revealed For Paranormal Activity 2

Well, here's some news that will no doubt thrill countless numbers of you out there. They've finally found a victim...er, I mean director to bring the sequel to Paranormal Activity to the big screen. Lots of people are of the opinion that this could only end up being a failure on the epic scale of Blair Witch 2. Personally, I don't know how anyone with a working knowledge of a camera couldn't improve on the original P.O.S. I don't know how one person (me) could have so much hatred in their heart for a simple roll of celluloid, but believe me it is possible. After the jump, you can see a screen capture of original director Oren Peli's personal note of singing optimistic approval for the choice of Kip Williams to take the helm of this monstrosity that could only be equated with the Titanic. Of course, he approves - it's more free cash in his pocket.

Reesa Likes Her Ride In The Time Machine

Three thirtysomething under-achieving best friends and one of their twentysomething nephews take a vacation to a ski resort, trying to recapture their 80’s heyday when each one experiences a run of bad luck. During a drunken party in the outdoor hot tub, an energy drink shorts the electric controls, and the foursome find themselves back in the party-hardy 1986.

Nothing says 80’s movies like John Cusack as Adam, who just had a painful break-up with his girlfriend. His best buddies are Lou (Rob Corddry) - a party animal who can’t seem to find a party; Nick (Craig Robinson), who is obsessed with the idea that his wife cheated on him; and Adam's twentysomething nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke), who can’t leave his basement and video games. After a drunken Lou almost kills himself by locking himself in his garage while singing 80’s power ballads in his running car, the guys decide to go back to the ski resort where they had the best time ever. However the resort is all rundown, there’s a dead critter in the hot tub, and the bellboy (Crispin Glover) is missing an arm. Suddenly, the tub is all bubbling and functioning so they dive in for a Hangover-type night. The next thing they know everything around them has changed, the resort is full of young people, ladies are wearing leg warmers, and the bellboy has 2 arms again. They look in the mirror and they see themselves as they looked in high school.

Chevy Chase shows up as the hot tub repairman, looking as confused as they are and who gives them cryptic advice about the hot tub. The guys think they should not mess with the time line and just let history repeat itself. This includes Lou getting beat up. It also includes Adam getting sliced over the eye when he breaks up with a girlfriend, and getting to playing music again with his band. Jacob gets an eyeful when he sees his mom as a loose party girl and then later gets a surprise by discovering his father. After many misadventures, they can’t help to try and change their destinies.

This movie will delight anyone who can relate to the 80’s. Directed by Steve Pink (co-producer of High Fidelity) and written by Josh Heald, Sean Anders, and John Morris (Anders and Morris also did She’s Out of My League), this comedy is consistent in the nostalgic nods to the audience. The personalities of the actors really deliver without becoming annoying or trite. Like She’s Out of My League, that also did multiple screenings, there’s a sharp wit and the film doesn’t constantly dumb down the humor. Of course, as a Cusack fan, one can be assured that the work will always be satisfying. I personally didn’t find it quite as hilarious as some, but then this wasn’t exactly in my generational reference. Anyone who finds That 70’s Show amusing will enjoy this film. Just be glad they didn’t cast Ashton Kutcher in Cusack’s role. I suspect after this movie is released, there may be an increase of hot tub parties in your neighborhood. The Karate Kid Trailers

We've posted the first two trailers for the upcoming remake / reboot / whatever you want to call it for The Karate Kid after the jump. I'm looking at it as a different movie in general. It has the same themes as the original version, but it's just a whole different character dealing with the same types of problems as the first series' Daniel character. It's kind of like another Next Karate Kid - same theme, different character. You know what would be really cool? If they put Chris Tucker in this and called it The Karate Kid's Rush Hour. Now there's an idea! Yeah, I don't know where that bit of randomness came from either. I apologize.

In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

The Karate Kid was directed by Harald Zwart and stars Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan,and Taraji P. Henson.

The movie comes out on June 11th.

Shrek Forever After Character Posters

DreamWorks and Paramount just sent us pictures of the character posters for the highly anticipated animated sequel, Shrek Forever After. There's six of them featuring Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Rumpelstiltskin, and Gingy. My favorite one is the angry Gingy riding a lion-shaped cookie carrying a lollipop sickle. Very cool. You can check them all out together right after the jump.

After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing a beautiful princess and saving your in-laws' kingdom, what's an ogre to do? Well, if you're Shrek, you suddenly wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What's happened to this ogre's roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre," Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it's up to Shrek to undo all he's done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.

Shrek Forever After was directed by Mike Mitchell and stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Antonio Banderas.

Look for it in theaters on May 21st.

Twilight Indian Actor At Dallas Indian Market This Weekend!

I just got wind of this today, but definitely wanted to help promote it. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there that don't know about it. The 21st Annual Texas Indian Market and Southwest Showcase is this weekend at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, TX. The event starts today and goes through Sunday, March 28th. Among the many activities that are going on during the whole weekend, they have a few pretty cool actors that will be on-hand to meet and greet their fans. Scheduled to appear are The Twilight Saga's Gil Birmingham (Billy Black - Jacob Black's father). He's also been in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You can also meet Irene Bedard (voice of Disney's Pocahontas, Steven Spielberg's Into the West, Smoke Signals), Steve Reevis (Dances with Wolves, Geronimo, The Missing), and Moses J. Brings Plenty (Pirates of the Caribbean, Hidalgo). Other very cool attractions at the event include Navajo Weaving Market, Native American Books & Music, Indian Food Court, and Photo Opportunities with a bald eagle, and more. Reesa Wants To Train A Dragon, Too!

Synopsis:
A Viking teenager named Hiccup lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teen's smarts and offbeat sense of humor don't sit too well with his tribe or its chief... who just happens to be Hiccup's father. However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other Viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. But when he encounters (and ultimately befriends) an injured dragon, his world is flipped upside down, and what started out as Hiccup's one shot to prove himself turns into an opportunity to set a new course for the future of the entire tribe.

Review:
On the island of Berk lives a hardy tribe of Viking whose lives are centered on killing dragons that besiege their village, steal their animals, and destroy their homes. A Viking teen named Hiccup is not a big help when it comes to defense and everyone tells him to stay indoors and out of the way.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel) is the brainy son of Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), an old-school chief of a Viking tribe. He doesn’t understand his son’s wry humor, sophisticated observations, or his ability to create these mechanical devices that could help in their battle with the dragons. Hiccup sneaks out with his bola-shooting cannon and manages to hit the most feared dragon of all, the Night Fury - the one that is so fast and dangerous no one has ever seen it. Of course no one believes him.

He sneaks away and finds the dragon entangled in the bola. Armed with a small knife, Hiccup thinks if he kills the dragon he will be accepted by the tribe and respected by his father. But looking at the defenseless creature, he can’t bring himself to do it. So he unties the dragon’s bonds. The black dragon with the green cat-like eyes stares him down, but then flies away. Hiccup realizes that he’s just not cut out to slay anything.

Returning to the village, his father thinks it’s about time that Hiccup mans up and takes his place among the Vikings. He decides to send him to dragon school along with the other village teens while the rest of the warriors take their long ships out to find the dragon nest. Gobber the Belch (Craig Ferguson) is the blacksmith missing a leg and hand from his misadventures is in charge of the dragon school. His teaching methods are to put the teens in the arena and release a captured dragon and see how they react. Astrid (America Ferrera) is the embodiment of a strong Viking fighter. She’s fearless in her attacks, but becomes suspicious when Hiccup begins to win each competition.

Hiccup returns to the forest and finds that the dragon he released has lost a rudder wing on his tail and can’t fly. This makes him feel guilty for his part in the injury and he slowly befriends the dragon which he names Toothless. He builds him a wing, but the only way it works is if it’s manually opened. That means he has to fly on the dragon to manipulate the controls. Through his friendship with Toothless, he realizes everything he has learned from 300 years of Viking dragon lore is incorrect. He uses the knowledge discovered through his experience with Toothless in his dragon training. When he earns the right to face his first dragon to the death, he realizes that he must convince his tribe to no longer slay dragons.

Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois (Mulan, Lilo & Stitch) took over as co-directors about a year and a half before the project was due. They rewrote the story that had closely followed the 2003 children's novel by British author Cressida Cowell, which was too young and sweet. The dragon was changed from a smaller version in the book to the Night Fury. The CGI-animated movie has been created for 3D and considering the recent releases in this format, this is a way better product. The technical know-how would be nothing without the excellent story, though. The characters are entertaining and heartfelt. The family dynamic with the father, son, dragons, and friendship work so well with the action sequences that one forgets that the characters are animated.
